The Tabor Society was founded by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Heyer in Heidelberg in the year 1976. He explored the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia and observed that continued existence of the unique system of Ethiopian Church-Schools is endangered. The Tabor Society supports the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia to preserve the traditional system of Church-Schools in order to assure that the very old knowledge of the church is handed down. The society does not interfere with the themes of the lessons taught at the Orthodox Church-Schools.

The Tabor Society is a non-profit organization (the last official recognition for the period 1998 to 2002 was issued on May 3rd 1999) registered in Heidelberg. It was registered under the number 929 at the register for organizations at the municipal court Heidelberg. Membership fees and donations are tax deductible.

The journal of the society, „Kirche und Schule in Äthiopien“, reports from the Tabor Society e.V. Heidelberg, is published once a year.

The Tabor Society uses the money collected from membership fees and donations to support directly the livelihood of teachers and students in five church-schools in Ethiopia. This amounted to more than 300.000 Euro for a period of 25 years.

The society will be happy to supply suitable speakers for informative talks within the scope of its focus.
