Mäkanä Iyäsus, Este

(1) Natural Altarstone

Mäkanä Iyäsus, Este

This old and famous monastery is located south of Däbrä Tabor nearby the hamlet Este. Not too far away from the monastery within an extended pasture a mineral salty spring– with holy water – is found close to a steep rising rock-formation.
Some time ago a huge rock droped into the valley and thus represents a natural altarstone. The processions of seven churches meet here during important feasts; seven Tabota (plural of Tabot which is a copy of the Decalogue and the holy of the holies for the Ethiopian church) lie upon this altar during the celebrations.
